Are you nourishing your child’s brain?

Like all Super Moms, you and your kids start your day with a healthy breakfast with a “low fat” glass of milk followed by a “diet” labneh sandwich.

For lunch you are very conscientious about only cooking with “canola oil” and using skinless boneless chicken breasts. I mean who needs the skin right? It’s “full of cholesterol”!

You never buy butter and try limiting the amount of eggs in your cooking and baking.

You are doing the right thing by preventing your kids from becoming fat and sick.

Or are you???

I am here to tell you, that with all the good intentions to keep your family on a low-fat diet and trying to protect them from obesity…you’re taking the wrong turn…

You may be depriving their brains from key essential nutrients and leading them to crave more sugar!

A Swedish scientific study found those children on low-fat diets:

  • Were more overweight
  • Consumed more sugar
  • Had higher insulin resistance (which may lead to diabetes!)

What about cholesterol levels and cardiovascular disease?

Numerous studies have now shown that intake of saturated fat was not associated with the increase risk of heart disease or stroke.*

For 20 years, we have been following the U.S food pyramid which emphasizes the consumption of grains and carbs and limits significantly the consumption of fats.

And the result? People are still getting fatter and fatter.

Now to help you overcome the state of shock let me clarify which fats I’m talking about.

I am definitely NOT talking about fried foods, or margarine and all the fake artificial butter substitutes that fall under the category of hydrogenated fats.

I am also NOT including the vegetable cooking oils such as corn oil and canola oil which are the polyunsaturated fats everybody glorifies, but are in fact full of free radicals and are associated with increased cancer, increased heart disease, premature aging, immune system dysfunction, depressed learning disability, liver damage, and the list goes on and on.

I am talking about olive oil, butter, ghee, eggs, avocados, nuts and seeds, gelatin from grass-fed cows, coconut oil, liver that many people faint just by hearing their names!

All of these “healthy” saturated fats are just what your little ones’ brains are in need to have in order to develop wonderfully and stay healthy.

The reason being that they provide key nutrients for brain health, and as we all know the brain is 60% fat.

Let’s start with our beloved forgotten butter. The Time magazine recently published a cover that says “eat butter”. After hating butter for 20 years, butter is popular again.

ENDING THE WAR ON FAT

Hurray! A good quality butter is rich in brain nourishing fat soluble vitamins like vitamins A, D and, K. These cannot be properly absorbed without dietary fats.

Get to think of it now that I’m writing: no wonder everybody is vitamin D deficient these days!

Egg yolks are also rich in choline, which protects the brain from cell phones and electromagnetic fields.

The red meat we are all scared of provides zinc which improves the memory and learning capabilities.

And the liver our grandmothers and mothers used to beg us to eat contains the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) crucial for a healthy structure and development of the brain as well as the nervous system and the visual function.

We are all worried about preventing obesity, but what about Alzheimer’s and learning disabilities? These are all partially linked to a low-fat diet.

The brain thrives on “real” fats, and not the fake low-fat artificially enhanced foods that have lost a big part of their nutritional value and have so many added sweeteners to compensate for the lost flavor given by fat.

I said it before and I will say it again: fat doesn’t make you fat. So if you want to raise a healthy smart child, go back to the full fat version of everything and stay away from processed foods, sugars, sodas, fried foods.

These foods are to blame for the increase in obesity not the fats.

Next time you prepare a meal for your kids think about adding moderate amounts of nourishing fats, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
