The Rise of Social Media "influencers" in Lebanon and the Demise of the English Language

Hi!  My name is Chirine.  I’m your typical (maybe not so typical) working mom of three angels who are devils for the most part of the day.  I basically run on caffeine and lots of crazy!  So I guess I am your typical mom after all 🙂

I’m quite active on social media; some might say I am even addicted to it.  I’m basically on all social media platforms except for Twitter which I never got the hang of.
And being quite active, I follow a lot of different accounts ranging from friends to bloggers to influencers to design accounts to all the hip and cool places in town and the list goes on…

Today, I feel I have to talk about bloggers or persons who call themselves “social influencers” in Lebanon.  And please don’t take this personally as a lot of you are doing a great job at getting yourselves out there.

But this past year, these “influencers/bloggers” have increased so much and most of the time the content they deliver is simply of very low standard and basically amateurish.

Regardless, if that’s how they perceive the material they are blogging about, then it’s their prerogative.

What gets to me the most is the writing standards that have plummeted to an all time low!

  • When has it become acceptable to not use punctuation!
  • Or to drop the subject (ex:  “Am very happy right now”),
  • Or to have a sentence run a whole paragraph with different ideas in it,
  • Or to have obvious spelling mistakes,
  • Or even….get the name of the brand wrong (yes people, I have proof!)

I can go on and on about the crimes against the English language that are in use by various “influencers/bloggers” but I am sure you get the idea.

Ideally, we want all bloggers to have a perfect Shakespearean English but we are willing to settle for at least grammatically correct posts, free of spelling mistakes and with ideas flowing properly within the post.

English

I do understand that English might not be that person’s second language (yes, second because Arabic is supposed to be our first in this country…but don’t get me started on that!) so why blog in a language you are not proficient in?

You might say that blogging in English helps you get a wider audience, and I understand that, but what I would suggest is having someone skilled in the English language proof read your material before posting it.

How are you supposed to influence people if you have spelling mistakes?

How are we supposed to take you seriously!

At this point, I want to also blame the brands/companies who are endorsing such persons!

Don’t you understand that your brand is losing credibility being associated with them!

I mean, yes, social media is the way to go these days, but what happened to being selective?

Why would you want someone who cannot write one proper sentence represent you?

Is that the image you are seeking?

I could go on and on with this rant but I won’t.

I would just like to ask all bloggers and influencers to be more aware of what they post and to do it properly.  Just like any job out there, to succeed you have to do the hard work.

Cheers to all the bloggers who are doing a great job and trust me, the audience is smart enough to differentiate between the good ones and the bad!
